In 2004 we began a Lighting the Way outreach in West Hollywood, right beside the AIDS testing and the homosexual youth handing out condoms—We had a “Heart for Him” table on Santa Monica Blvd. right outside the gay bars…and never got charged with a single hate crime, as people stopped to talk about Jesus, and we shared God’s love without compromising on what the Bible teaches.
On behalf of any Christians who had been rude and self-righteous toward the gay community and pedophile priests, we had a sign reading, “We are sorry for the way we have mistreated you.”
As the years passed, it got more dangerous with shootings in West Hollywood, so we stopped in 2010, but this was another great memory. No science has ever proven a gay gene. There is no gay gene. Yet, to people who struggle in this area it does feel like they were born that way. What the media does not report is how many men and women who DO get victory in this area, and we worked with many of them.
The key to the Christian life for all of us is self-denial. And God is out to heal the “why” behind our sin, and we all have to be willing to face it in order to let God heal the “why” to walk instead in a life free from sin and shame. Just because we want something does not make it right, and that is just the nature of the flesh and sin in all of us. To follow Jesus is to choose newness of life—the same message for us all anywhere, including West Hollywood.
