Jesus NOT Yoga

Chew the Meat; Spit Out the Bones

We were astonished when we first heard this statement. In all of our 50-plus years we had never encountered this phrase before. It immediately conjured up graphic images of sharp teeth roughly biting off and devouring a tough piece of meat, and rudely spewing out pieces of bone. Surely there were better table manners than this!

We first heard this retort when we had expressed a concern about a curriculum. Ostensibly this curriculum was a book that would embody the teachings of our local church, and it was written by a man highly esteemed and respected – a man who held many positions of leadership in parachurch groups. Yet embedded throughout his curriculum were heresies. We worried that teaching these heresies could adversely affect families in our church.

What Language Do You Speak?

Our spoken and written language is the most important aspect of our culture and identity as a people. In 1997 The Summer Institute of Linguistics noted that the Bible had been translated into 2,197 languages. The Ethnologue Institute has a detailed list of 6,809 distinct languages. In the U.S. we recognize what part of the country someone comes from by their accent. As an American traveling overseas, my ears always perk up when an American accent floats across a crowded airport (Americans seem to speak quite loudly, especially overseas). We identify one another by our language. Our knowledge of the spoken and the written word enables us to hear and understand each other.

Likewise, true knowledge is gained through understanding. Understanding comes through applying oneself to the Truth. Proverbs 24:5 states that: A man of knowledge increaseth strength.

The Word of God is the very fountain of all knowledge. The study thereof should be of utmost importance in the believer’s life. It will identify us as believers. Our knowledge of the Word will enable us to hear and understand His will for our lives.

The Non-Seeker Friendly Truth of the Bible

(Tim Keller is senior pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church NYC. Daniel Mann makes some important points in this pertinent piece. Compare Tim’s seeker-friendly approach to astute, biblical commentary by Henry Morris on evangelism based on the Genesis creation account here .)

In an interview in Christianity Today (June 2008, pg. 38), Tim Keller states:

“So I want to be noncommittal [about the arguments for intelligent design]. I don’t want the people who don’t like one creation view to feel like they can’t listen to the rest of the gospel. Instead I point out that it’s a red herring to go after that before you decide whether Jesus died and rose again…And I was trying to say, ‘Because you believe in evolution, does this mean that Jesus Christ couldn’t be raised from the dead?’ If he was raised from the dead, then you have to take seriously the Scriptures and you have to work on all this. If he wasn’t raised from the dead, who cares about Genesis 1-ll?”

Although Keller is correct in being Gospel-centered and also that it’s best to reorient some people back to the core message, others are going to balk:

“Why should I take your gospel seriously? Why should I even entertain the possibility that Jesus rose from the dead? If the Bible isn’t correct about Genesis 1-11, what reason do I have to believe that it’s correct about Jesus?”

“Enlightened Selfishness”

Have you heard about “enlightened selfishness?” It’s the atheistic equivalent of living by God-given moral absolutes. It seems to be the rage on the NYU campus. When I ask the students if they believe in moral absolutes like “genocide and torturing babies is wrong” or even “justice and injustice,” they usually deny that there is a moral reality independent from ourselves, but also claim that they don’t need this type of morality. Why not? Their answer usually goes something like this:

Thoughts From A-Z

Thoughts From A-Z

“Abba, Father,” He prayed
Begotten of the Father, His only Son
Christ Crucified, a cruel death
Dying on the cross, for you and me
Everlasting life for those who believe Him
Forgiveness through that perfect Lamb without sin
God’s gift of salvation to all who love Him
He is risen, holy, faithful and true
Iniquity found in all mankind, separating us from the Father
Jesus lives, His only Son, the only Way.
Kept by His righteous right hand
Love without end, living for Him
Master, Saviour, Lord and Friend
Never failing, always with us
One Saviour, One faith, Our Hope
Paths taken, never faltering, with Him leading the way
Quietly seeking His will, to serve and obey
Repent, Run the race, no matter the cost
Salvation promised, by God’s Grace we are saved
Trials to purify, temptations to overcome
Unspeakable joy for those saying, ‘Yes ‘
Victories are many, the battle rages on, He abides with us still
Wounded for our transgressions, He showed His love for us
Exposed to the bone and marrow, He knows our innermost thoughts
Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow may not be, Today is the day of Salvation
Zeal for sharing Christ Jesus and we cry, “Abba, Father,” and pray.
